Margaret Roberts writes to us about her most recent achievements:
“I have been busy with other pear-related work in 2018 and was invited to advise on a new publication called The Worcester Black Pear http://www.marcherapple.net/product/new-book-the-worcester-black-pear-by-wade-muggleton/
I have also continued my research into Warden Abbey, Bedfordshire and the monastery’s story in brief is now available on the Warden Abbey Vineyard website: http://www.wardenvineyard.org.uk/warden-abbey-story/
I have also contributed to a blog post on the Warden manuscripts, which was published by the Wren Library, Cambridge in March 2018 https://trinitycollegelibrarycambridge.wordpress.com/2018/03/
The highlight of 2018 was the unveiling on 20th July of a reconstruction painting of Warden Abbey. Completed by former Historic England reconstruction artist, Peter Dunn, the artwork shows the abbey as it may have appeared c.1370 and every aspect is based on evidence unearthed by Margaret over the last 4 years. I was extremely grateful for the support of Dr Glyn Coppack, an internationally respected authority on the Cistercians (also known as the White Monks) without whom the project would have been impossible. The Old Warden History & Heritage Society has purchased the original, which will go on public display.”
This sounds so interesting Margaret. Thank you for the update.
Eventispress author Margaret Roberts is giving a
on The Original Warden Pear
on 19th March, 2018
between 11:00 am and 12.00 pm
The talk is free but the centre asks for donations if possible.
Here is the Forest of Marston Vale website
“Having enjoyed widespread popularity until the late 17th century, the warden pear gradually faded into obscurity. The Original Warden Pear uncovers its story, bringing together evidence from monks, horticulturalists, physicians and bookkeepers. Poets, songwriters and playwrights captured the spirit of the pear from the late 14th century onwards, while 21st century DNA testing has sought to discover whether anything of the old warden pears has survived.”
The Original Warden Pear by Margaret Roberts has now been released for sale in the UK on Amazon. All profits for this book will go to the Friends of Warden Abbey Vineyard ~ A community wine grower (Registered Charity No. 1176602).
Eventispress is extremely pleased to support this community charity!
Another opportunity to meet author Margaret Roberts. She will be signing copies of ‘The Original Warden Pear’ at:
Eventispress author Margaret Roberts talked and signed copies of her book ‘The Original Warden Pear’ at the Warden Abbey Vineyard Open Day on Sunday 10th September 2017.
Brian Kerr also enjoyed success selling copies of ‘An Unassuming County’ at an Eventispress stall which displayed our publications highlighting our work in Bedfordshire.
I’m sure that a great day was had by all, as local producers sold their wares, alongside Warden Abbey Wines. Well done Margaret and Brian!

About the book:
“Having enjoyed widespread popularity until the late seventeenth century, the warden pear gradually faded into obscurity. The Original Warden Pear uncovers its story, bringing together evidence from monks, horticulturalists, physicians and bookkeepers. Poets, songwriters and playwrights captured the spirit of the pear from the late fourteenth century onwards, while twenty-first century DNA testing has sought to discover whether anything of the old warden pears has survived. The Original Warden Pear will appeal to those interested in horticulture, the arts, theology, Bedfordshire local history and medieval medicine. Recipes are included, so that readers can recreate the sorts of pear dishes enjoyed by the fifteenth-century nobility, or bake one of the famous Warden Pies. All profits from the book will go towards the upkeep of Warden Abbey Vineyard, a Bedfordshire Rural Communities Charity project.”
Spring is in the air at Eventispress.
