Supporting Worthy Causes

Eventispress always aims to support worthy causes where they can, in two different ways:

Publishing books for charities to sell themselves:

  • The Original Warden Pear by Margaret Roberts is sold in aid of The Warden Abbey Community Vineyard in Bedfordshire. 100% profits go to that charity. They control the sales and hold copyright to the book. Although most of the books are sold through local venues and at the vineyard open days, it is also available on Amazon too.
  • Kinghorn Lunchclub Social Memories by Yvonne Georgeson is a compilation of life stories written by the elderly members of this lunchclub. The publication of this little book during the lock down was perfect timing, because it lifted the spirits of those who were isolated. 100% of the proceeds go to the club. It is mainly sold locally but it is also available on Amazon.

Authors who give part or all of the profits to charity

Author Diana Jackson has always supported causes close to her heart.

The Life and Demise of Norman Campbell published in 2012 and the majority were given or sold to family all over the world but 25% was given to Cancer Research UK in the first year of publication.

The Healing Paths of Fife published in 2017 gives 100% of gross profits from local booksales, orders through bookshops and on Amazon and has raised £673 to date to local causes, mainly The Kirkcaldy Foodbank. This is gross profit. We only charge for the price of the printed book.

Whether you are an author or small Indie Press like ourselves, a useful post which gives you all the information you need to know if you wish profits from sales of books to go to worthy causes can be found on Self Publishing Relief.

The most important thing is to keep careful records.

Update from author Margaret Roberts

Margaret Roberts writes to us about her most recent achievements:

“I have been busy with other pear-related work in 2018 and was invited to advise on a new publication called The Worcester Black Pear http://www.marcherapple.net/product/new-book-the-worcester-black-pear-by-wade-muggleton/

I have also continued my research into Warden Abbey, Bedfordshire and the monastery’s story in brief is now available on the Warden Abbey Vineyard website: http://www.wardenvineyard.org.uk/warden-abbey-story/

I  have also contributed to a blog post on the Warden manuscripts, which was published by the Wren Library, Cambridge in March 2018 https://trinitycollegelibrarycambridge.wordpress.com/2018/03/

The highlight of 2018 was the unveiling on 20th July of a reconstruction painting of Warden Abbey. Completed by former Historic England reconstruction artist, Peter Dunn, the artwork shows the abbey as it may have appeared c.1370 and every aspect is based on evidence unearthed by Margaret over the last 4 years. I was extremely grateful for the support of Dr Glyn Coppack, an internationally respected authority on the Cistercians (also known as the White Monks) without whom the project would have been impossible. The Old Warden History & Heritage Society has purchased the original, which will go on public display.”

This sounds so interesting Margaret. Thank you for the update.

Author Margaret Roberts’ Lunchtime Talk at The Forest Centre at Marston Vale

Eventispress author Margaret Roberts is giving a

Lunchtime Talk

on The Original Warden Pear

on 19th March, 2018

between 11:00 am and 12.00 pm

The talk is free but the centre asks for donations if possible.

Here is the Forest of Marston Vale website

Margaret explains:

“Having enjoyed widespread popularity until the late 17th century, the warden pear gradually faded into obscurity. The Original Warden Pear uncovers its story, bringing together evidence from monks, horticulturalists, physicians and bookkeepers. Poets, songwriters and playwrights captured the spirit of the pear from the late 14th century onwards, while 21st century DNA testing has sought to discover whether anything of the old warden pears has survived.”

Success at Warden Abbey Vineyard Open Day

Eventispress author Margaret Roberts talked and signed copies of her book  ‘The Original Warden Pear’  at the Warden Abbey Vineyard Open Day on Sunday 10th September 2017.

Brian Kerr also enjoyed success selling copies of ‘An Unassuming County’ at an Eventispress stall which displayed our publications highlighting our work in Bedfordshire.

I’m sure that a great day was had by all, as local producers sold their wares, alongside Warden Abbey Wines.  Well done Margaret and Brian!

THE ORIGINAL WARDEN PEAR by Margaret Roberts

Great news!

The Original Warden Pear by Margaret Roberts has now been released for sale in the UK on Amazon. All profits for this book will go to The Warden Abbey Vineyard ~ A community wine grower.

About the book:

“Having enjoyed widespread popularity until the late seventeenth century, the warden pear gradually faded into obscurity. The Original Warden Pear uncovers its story, bringing together evidence from monks, horticulturalists, physicians and bookkeepers. Poets, songwriters and playwrights captured the spirit of the pear from the late fourteenth century onwards, while twenty-first century DNA testing has sought to discover whether anything of the old warden pears has survived. The Original Warden Pear will appeal to those interested in horticulture, the arts, theology, Bedfordshire local history and medieval medicine. Recipes are included, so that readers can recreate the sorts of pear dishes enjoyed by the fifteenth-century nobility, or bake one of the famous Warden Pies. All profits from the book will go towards the upkeep of Warden Abbey Vineyard, a Bedfordshire Rural Communities Charity project.”

Introducing our new author at Eventispress ~ Margaret Roberts

Margaret Roberts came to us at Eventispress because she liked our ‘local’ – face to face approach, where she could be involved and have a say at every level of her projects.

Passionately interested in history, especially local to Bedfordshire, Margaret devotes much of her time to ‘The Warden Abbey Community Vineyard‘ which has produced royal approved sparkling wine!

Her first book, ‘The Original Warden Pear’ which is grown on the Old Warden site, will be released on Amazon.co.uk in early May (more news shortly)  and then sold locally.

Profits for the book will go to The Warden Abbey Community Vineyard, which is now run by volunteers. Eventispress is pleased to support local projects such as this.

More information about Margaret and her writing can be found on her page above.
